Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the ovary, typically occurring once every menstrual cycle. The "fertile window" includes the five days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, while an egg is viable for only 12 to 24 hours after release.
